Tips for Toddlers and Newborns-Bountiful Utah Family Photographer
I have been dying to do a session at this beautiful spot in Bountiful and it was beautiful in the spring. When everything is coming back to life and looking vibrant again. This sweet family wanted pictures after welcoming their baby boy and this is a great location for an earlier afternoon to avoid cranky kids with earlier bedtimes and still gives you that dreamy lighting. When you have your first baby and do pictures, the experience can be very different from when you welcome your second and then have to juggle a potentially fussy newborn and entertain a toddler. Here’s some tips to help make a newborn session with other kids go smoothly.
Make it all about the toddler, you read that right. Usually a toddler a few weeks into having a newborn at home is having a bit of an identity crisis and looking for a little extra attention. Focus on them and follow their cues. Let them lead the session and then they will be much more willing to be involved than if the focus is all on this new baby. You can still get all the pictures you want with the newborn by doing this!
Give them breaks- This gives you the chance to get individual pictures of parents with the new baby or the baby individually. if the toddler is doing great and doesn’t need a break you can have them play with one of the parents while you get the shots you need of the baby with the other. Then switch to do the same with the other parent and kid.
Make it fun and light hearted, there is no set shot list when you are working with newborns and toddlers. But distraction and being a head of the game with ideas and things for them to be doing will really help.
I did all of those things here and as you can see we had a really successful session! If you want someone who is really good with kids and newborns, and will make a session go smoothly and stress free please reach out!
