How to Survive the Cold in a Snow Session- Salt Lake Family Photographer
Snowy sessions where it is actively snowing makes it 100% more magical and a bit more chaotic, let’s be honest. This family were troopers having just moved from the Bay Area and not having really experienced snow yet. I’d love to share some tips if your kids are not used to the snow and how to keep morale high during your time outside. Read below for a few tips!
You have to work quickly, and parents be on board to just suck it up and not complain if you’re cold or the snow is making you wet. The better attitudes you can have during the session will help your kids be able to go a few more minutes than you think they can. Distraction is a huge key to a successful snow session. Distract with hugging, running in the snow, catching snowflakes on your tongue, pulling them in a sled, and if you really need it, a break in the car, though I feel like once they go in a warm car they don’t really come back out happily.
Make sure to dress your kids appropriately for the weather. Beanies, gloves (that you can sneak hand warmers in), snow boots. and extra layers will make all the difference for lasting longer out in the cold. I don’t suggest you come in formal attire (dresses or suit coats) as you’ll be freezing despite it looking a little fancier and its so hard to hide layers under clothing like that. You want jackets and be able to get some long johns or tights hidden under the top clothing.
As you may not make it your full time, make sure to voice to your photographer whatever poses or photos are most important to you to get. Then with the extra time you can throw in some playing to get a few more minutes our of them but then you have confidently gotten the certain shots you wanted. Feel free to incorporate anything that you think your kids might find exciting: sleds, hot chocolate, blankets that you're ok with putting out in the snow. Think of your session time as a the chance for some new and fun family memories.
Despite these boys being cold they gave us some great smiles and fun before they got too cold. And mom and dad were troopers and made it as fun for these boys in their first big experience with the snow. If you’re interested in a snow session please reach out!
