Why You Shouldn't be Afraid of Booking a Session This Winter -Utah Family Photographer

Maybe you’re like the rest of Utah during winter who counts down the days after Christmas for the snow to go away. Or maybe you’re one of the few who embraces the snow while it’s here. I know the snow gets a bad wrap but I am here to try and convince you that getting family pictures done in the snow at least once is totally worth it.

  1. Its fun to get pictures done in different seasons

Maybe you have always had your pictures done in the Fall. Or the Spring. I think it is fun to see your family in all seasons. This doesn’t mean you need to book a photoshoot every few months unless you really want to. But every year you can try something new. Some perks of doing a session in the winter is you are not fighting crowds for specific locations and you don’t have to stress over bedtimes getting interrupted because of late sunsets.

2. You’ll be warmer than you think

I know this is probably everyones fear when it comes to a snowy session but with the help of my winter outfit guide and layers, blankets and hand warmers and lots of games and distractions the time will fly I promise you. The most important thing as far as outfits go is layers and winter accessories. If you make sure everyone has gloves and beanies and boots with warm socks your kids will last much longer than you think. I always provide a nice warm blanket and hand warmers for those who want them and I have seriously not experienced any tears from kids til after the hour mark of shooting out in the snow.

3. If you have parts of your body you are not comfortable with then a winter session is your best time for a photoshoot because the layered clothing is an easy way to hide that.

I know often you want to feel your “Physical best” when it comes to a photoshoot, and as much as I preach not letting weight gain keep you from getting in the picture or delaying a photoshoot I do know that everyone has insecurities about themselves. Please believe when I say that you don’t need to be in full on snow suits for a session, but likewise you can still look great with a few layers on. A long pea coat or oversized sweater can hide areas or parts of you you aren’t super comfortable with versus in the summer its not as easy to cover things when its 90 degrees and you’re sweating to death.

4. There is so much to do WITH the snow.

During a typical session during other months of the year, yes you can run through grass and skip rocks in a lake but in the snow there is so much more to do and interact with. At snow sessions I have had families play with sleds, do snowball fights, build snowmen, make snow angels, snuggle under a blanket, and the list goes on. Kids are usually captivated by the snow. They are not afraid to run in it, race, catch snow flakes on their tongues, it really brings out the fun sides in families. To watch parents engage in all the fun is where your kids really feel like they have “permission” to be themselves and the pictures will be beautiful. And when you are playing and having fun with your kids the time will fly!

I Hope these tips and these pictures are evidence enough to give a winter session a chance! Please reach out to me to do them when you decide.
